How to Befriend a Change Dragon

Do you believe in Change Dragons?
I imagine you are asking, “What is she talking about?”
“What is a Change Dragon?”

I’ll explain.

Change is always happening, right?
I’m sitting here on my deck looking at the sky.
The cloud formations are changing before my eyes.
Is there anything that stays the same?

“Change is a part of life,” is a common saying.
If that’s true, why do we resist change so much?

This has been a year of great, positive change in my family. My daughter Maria and Marty’s wedding, my son Aaron’s graduation from college, my son Noah’s graduation from High School, I released a new book, Dancing Inside and completed Business School, we moved…twice…that’s a lot of change for one year, a lot of powerful passages and occasions to celebrate love, perseverance, achievement and creativity!

Do you see? This is a perfect environment for the Change Dragons to show up!

The soul loves change but the ego doesn’t.

Any wonderful change…a new baby, a new puppy, a new home
or job or school or project has two sides…a YES and a NO!

And here comes:

The Dragon of Doubt:
“Really? Do you think you can do what? Don’t you think it’s better to stay where you are?”

The Dragon of Fear
“Are you sure you’re brave enough to trust love, yourself, life?”

The Dragon of Anger
“NO! Stop! Turn back! A new path could be dangerous!”

So how do we befriend these dragons when they show up?

Here’s what works for me:

First, I learn everything I can about dragons.  Mythology tells us that dragons are often seen as powerful spirit guides who bring us important messages.

They can show up in many forms:

Fire Dragons bring lessons of self-mastery, creativity and leadership.

Water Dragons question how we are “steering our ship”. Be ready to put down unhealthy patterns in order to sail to more harmonious waters.

Earth Dragons provide keys for sustaining basic needs.

Air Dragons wrap us in his/her loving wings and fly high to gain new perspectives so we can be untroubled by the winds of change.

Next,
  • Look them in the eyes and introduce yourself
  • Thank them for showing up to help you
  • Give them a job to do
  • Hug them
  • Offer a hand in friendship

If we are willing to recognize these mythical helpers, welcome them and befriend them, they won’t run the show. Instead, they can become our greatest allies.

How cool is that?

I think my favorite dragon at the moment is the Air Dragon!

It’s silly and fun, I know!

I hope you’ve enjoyed all this dragon talk.

My son Noah just read this blog and now he’s going to watch the Hobbitt.
Dragon talk is delightfully contagious!

I’d love you to leave a comment,

Love always,

Deborah
